Fried Locust

Sorry for the long time without a post. Our life here has been fairly uneventful lately. We get up, go to class, come home, study, have more class, study, eat dinner, do homework, go to bed, and then get up and do it all over again. But last night we did go to one of our favorite Chinese restaurants. Every time we go there we've seen that they have fried locusts (like a grasshopper or cricket) and had really been wanting to try them but had never gotten up the guts to order a whole dish of them. Well last night was our lucky night, because the people sitting beside us ordered them.

So we played the dumb foreigner card (a valid one at this point) and asked them what their dish was called. We seemed very interested, and inside we were hoping they would let us try one... and they did. They're very crunchy and the added spice actually gave them a nice flavor. So they proceeded to scoop more into our bowls after they saw we could bear them. I told them that in the US people don't eat these and that we had never tried them before. I told my Chinese teacher of our experience, and her response was, "Yeah, we eat fried locust here, like you guys eat popcorn or potato chips!"

Believe it or not, I think we might actually order them again sometime. Anyone want to go out to eat?
