We usually only eat these on the weekends because the stand isn't on our way to school, but these are our favorites.
Er kuai is made of cooked rice, then kneaded into dough form. It's literally called "ear piece" in reference to one it's more common shapes. Shao er kuai is a round pita-shaped erkuai, roasted (shao or kao) over a charcoal fire and prepared with some jam spread on top. There are usually three kinds of jams: sweet, spicy and preserved beancurd jams. The sweet jams are a mixture of peanut paste and sesame seed jam; the spicy jam is peanuts with typical local chili sauce and/or preserved beancurd. The price is usually around 1 or 1.5 RMB or around $0.25. These pictures show Shaoerkuai with a deep fried dough stick (youtiao) wrapped inside with the sweet jam (for Kristi) and spicy (for Josh). Erkuai can be used to make innumerable dishes depending on how its cooked, and what it's mixed with. It is a very common local ingredient, and it is even more popular during the Lunar New Year celebration! It may not look appetizing, but it is delicious!
